Define the effect you want
Gathering changes how fabric sits and how volume is distributed. If your design includes a gathered panel or edge, share both an overall reference and a close-up. Explain whether you want a subtle texture, fuller volume or a particular distribution of folds.
The video shows a gathered edge being handled during sewing. It is a useful starting point for discussing fabric control, but the finished look must be reviewed on a complete sample.
Confirm the construction with your reference
A photograph alone may not explain how a gathered detail should work. Discuss where the gathering begins and ends, the finished dimensions and the intended function. If elastic is part of your design, specify that requirement separately rather than assuming that every gathered edge uses elastic.
- Position and length of the gathered area
- Finished measurements and target fit
- Whether elastic or another construction method is required
- Desired fullness and distribution of folds
- How the detail should feel against the body
Review the whole sample, not just the close-up
Check the garment from the front, back and sides. Look for unintended twisting, uneven volume or seams that pull the surrounding fabric out of shape. Compare paired details where the design calls for symmetry.
Try the sample through the movements relevant to its intended use. If the detail is meant to stretch, discuss fit and recovery during review. Keep the material, construction and finished measurements together in the approval notes.
Make revisions easy to follow
Mark a photo to show where you want more or less fullness, and include the desired finished measurement when you can. A comment such as “reduce fullness at the side while keeping the front unchanged” is more useful than “make it neater.”
Share your reference with YILI if you are developing a garment with gathered details. Include your target quantity and what you want the sample to demonstrate, so we can discuss the next development step.
